Common Misconceptions
It is a common misconception from the outside that people who identify themselves as vampires think that they have super human traits or else that they are the immortal sort who cannot walk in the sunlight. These traits belong to Mythological Vampires (See Category: Vampirism – What It Is, What It Is Not). Every self-identifying vampire is a human being, the word “vampire” only serving as a metaphor, and nothing mythological plays into how they operate; I will, however, argue that there is something Metaphysical that plays into how they operate.
Non-vampires throw words around like, “lunatic,” “emo,” “goth,” and paraphrasing here, “that people who call themselves vampires can't get a grip on real life so they immerse themselves in a fantasy.” Most vampires have jobs, husbands, wives, maybe even children, and live just like every other member of society; they could even be your next door neighbor. There is no fantasy involved when you live in the real world.
Myth Busting Concerning Modern Day Vampires:
-They do not burn in the sunlight.
-Holy water does not affect them, although it is quite refreshing.
-They can see their reflections in mirrors, although they may not always like it.
-Garlic does not affect us, other than minor indigestion for some.
-We can look at, hold, and even pray in front of a crucifix.
-Vampirism is not a Cult.
(It is possible that there are some people who belong to a “vampire cult,” but the majority of Modern Vampires wouldn't even touch that.)
-Vampirism is not a Religion.
(Some people may incorporate Vampirism into their preexisting religion but Vampirism is not a religion in and of itself)
-We do not worship Satan.
(Again, everyone has different beliefs, there may be people identifying as vampires that do indeed worship Satan; just like someone can be Christian and still practice Magic: Deism.)
Yes, we are human beings.
Seems like so many people just fail to grasp what we're really saying and just focusing on the buzz word “vampire.” Along with so many other things I've heard, there are a slew of misconceptions floating about out there. Hopefully, these people will not only hear but they will listen as well.
